Background
ActionAid Australia supports climate resilience and women’s leadership projects through local partners. In Kenya, the GRACC project promotes gender-responsive approaches to climate change, especially in drought-affected communities.
To showcase the impact of this work, ActionAid is seeking female lead qualified consultant or media team to document compelling human-interest stories, photography, and videography of women participating in the GRACC project in Kathonzweni and Tangulbei.
2. Objectives
The documentation exercise aims to:
- Capture how climate change and gender inequality affect women’s lives and livelihoods.
- Highlight the impact of women-led initiatives such as the GRACC project and VSLAs (Village Savings and Loans Associations).
- Document shifts in gender norms, climate adaptation practices, and women's leadership.
- Produce empowering and ethical multimedia content for reporting and awareness.
3. Scope of Work
Story Collection
- Conduct in-depth interviews with 5–10 women (including at least two with a disability).
- Focus on personal and community-level transformation, participation in GRACC, and future aspirations.
Photography
- Capture 5–10 high-quality photos of elevated interviewee (portrait, action, and environmental shots).
- Include wide landscape photos and ensure images are respectful and empowering.
Videography
- Record 2–3 video interviews and relevant b-roll footage (daily life, project activities).
- Footage should be suitable for short-form storytelling and social media.
4. Deliverables
- 5–10 written case studies (400–600 words) with transcripts.
- 50 – 100 photos of elevated project participants and 5–10 organized photo sets in RAW and JPEG formats.
- 2–3 video interviews, raw footage, and optionally edited versions.
- Signed consent forms and brief background/observation notes for each case.
5. Timeline & Fieldwork
- Estimated field time: 3 days shoot + 2 days travel
- Fieldwork to occur in June 2025
6. Consultant Profile
Ideal applicants will have:
- Demonstrated experience in ethical storytelling, photography, and video production in development settings.
- Knowledge of gender equality, climate change, and participatory approaches.
- Experience working with marginalized communities with cultural sensitivity.
7. Ethical Standards
- Full informed consent must be obtained (ActionAid Kenya template provided).
- No documentation for children under 18.
- Participants can request pseudonyms or face coverage.
- Complaints mechanism is to be clearly explained to all participants.
8. Budget & Logistics
- Applicants must submit a detailed financial proposal, including estimated transport, accommodation, daily expenses, and equipment costs. Please note: After reviewing the financial proposals, ActionAid Kenya may opt to directly provide accommodation and transportation support instead of covering those costs.
- ActionAid Kenya will support with logistics and community access.
- Payment will be made upon approval of deliverables.
